Midland Lee 26, Amarillo High 10

MIDLAND, TX – Billed as Midland Lee’s “first real opponent of 2011”, the Rebels accepted the challenge and swept the Amarillo Sandies out of Grande Communications Stadium on Friday night. Live updates of the 26-10 Rebel victory was televised on Fox Sports Southwest.

After commiting a turnover on just the second play of the game, Lee watched Amarillo High convert that into the game’s first seven points five plays later. On the ensuing drive, Lee marched the ball down the field and scored behind three running plays by Travis Williams. The drive was capped off on a short touchdown run by Jason McAfee. The extra point was no good and the Rebels trailed 7-6. Two possessions later, Amarillo added three more points to the scoreboard to extend their lead to 10-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Lee bend-but-don’t-break defense tightened up the reins and gave the ball back to the offense early in the second period. The Rebels ate up about five minutes of clock, while mounting an 18-play scoring drive that ended with a Talor Nunez touchddown pass to Eric Ortega. Lee held a 13-10 lead at the intermission.

The Rebels coaching staff made supurb halftime adjustments, which became evident in the third quarter. Amarillo made several attempts to establish a running game. On numerous occasions, the Lee defense flat out manipulated the line of scrimmage. The Rebs took the Sandies completely out of the game in the third stanza. Miles Vincent kicked two field goals of 40-yards and 39-yards, and Nunez threw his second touchdown pass – a 20-yarder to Xavier Williams – to possess a 16-point lead at the end of the quarter.
